Satin Dress

With this project, I wanted to combine my nostalgic love for fairy tale characters with my present affinity for period dramas and art history. This dress was inspired by Autumn de Wilde’s film retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma, as well as paintings by Vittorio Reggianini and Frédéric Soulacroix. The style of the dress also took inspiration from costumes worn by fairy tale characters in children’s movies like Disney Princess movies and Barbie movies. This project utilized flat pattern techniques. The hem of the skirt curves in the front and runs along a front panel, meeting in the center at the waist, creating the illusion of an overskirt and underskirt.
